Opononi is a nice little town with a fine beach and a world-famous dolphin sculpture.
Opo - a wild dolphin, put this town on the map when, in 1955 he spent the summer playing with children and
entertaining the locals by performing tricks with beach balls. Sadly he was killed by fishermen, but the town has never
forgotten him, and a wonderful sculpture by Russell Clark now stands outside the local pub.
Opononi is also the place to catch a boat trip and visit the gigantic sand dunes on the far side of Hokianga harbour.
