The Old Course at St Andrews is our number one choice. The Old Course is the oldest golf course in the world, and the undisputed "Home of Golf". Every golfer should make a pilgrimage here at least once in his or her life! Contrary to popular belief, The Old Course is not owned by The Royal and Ancient Golf Club (R&A). This is a public course and anyone with a handicap below 24 (men) or 36 (women) can play here. However, this is also the most popular golf course on the planet - so securing a tee time is by no means guaranteed. 50 per cent of starting times are allocated in a ballot which is drawn every day for next day's play. The Saturday draw is for Monday's play. The course is closed on Sundays. If your name is drawn, you get to play The Old Course - if not, don't despair! There are seven courses at St Andrews - including the magnificent "New Course" which was built in 1895! A safer option than the ballot is to book into a hotel that has guaranteed starting times under a special arrangement with The Links Trust. Check with online golf tour operators for details.

Our second choice, Royal Dornoch, may surprise some - but not those who have had the pleasure of playing here! No course in Scotland is more beautiful, and no course in Scotland provides a better, fairer test of golf. Only its location in the far north-east of Scotland prevents this links from being a major world golfing attraction. But these days it is not so hard to get here - check with the online golf tour operators for details. For connoisseurs of truly great golf courses - Royal Dornoch is a must!

Turnberry enjoys one of the most spectacular settings in the world. And the Ailsa Course is one of Scotland's finest tests of golf - as the world's top golfers will discover in 2009, when Turnberry hosts The Open Championship. You could play here too! Check with online golf-tour-operators for details.
