Acer
Acer is a Taiwanese multi-national company, and the third biggest computer manufacturer in the world - after Hewlett-Packard and Dell.
In 1997 Acer bought Texas Instruments Computers. In 2007 they bought Gateway Computers, and in 2008 they took over Packard Bell.
They also own E-machines - who make budget computers and laptops.
Acer are major sponsors of sporting events - including the Ferrari Formula One Racing Team (hence the Acer Ferrari laptop range).
Known Problem With Acer Laptops
Acer laptops (and their subsidiary brands) often suffer with keyboard and mouse-pad failure.
This manifests itself after approx 1 year - just after the warranty runs out!
The computer starts and appears normal - but the keys and the mouse won't work.
The problem is caused by a faulty mother-board and Acer are well aware of it.
If it happens under warranty - they will replace or repair your laptop***.
But if the warranty has ended - you are on your own!
The cost of the repair for this problem is often higher than the original cost of the laptop.
The only way around this is to take out additional warranty cover - and make sure it covers this problem.
*** The Top Ten Site runs long-term tests on lots of different computers.
These are not "Scientific" tests - we don't count the keystrokes until a computer conks out etc -
We simply give them to our staff to use at home, so they are subjected to "normal" use.
We have been using four laptops from the Acer family.
They are an Acer Ferrari, Two Acer Aspire models, and a Gateway.
All of these computers broke down within an unacceptable period of time.
The Aspires conked out within weeks of the warranty ending - So Acer were not interested in our problems!
The Ferrari broke down (keyboard failure) after just 3 months - it was replaced under warranty.
And the Gateway went belly-up three days before the warranty ran out!
Gateway refused to replace it - but said they would repair it . However, what they actually did was send us a refurbished version of the same laptop.
The refurbished laptop was fine -and in perfect condition - but it was not the one we sent them - so we lost all the data and software from our laptop.
The moral of this story is - Back-Up everything on your laptop (using external hard-drives and/or memory sticks).
And don't buy a laptop from Acer, Gateway, Packard-Bell or E-Machines until
these companies face up to their responsibility and fix this problem!
